Egypt booked their place in the Round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA World Cup after defeating Australia 4-2 on penalties following a 1-1 draw after extra time at AT&T Stadium.

The Pharaohs made a bright start and took the lead in the 13th minute through Emam Ashour, whose strike gave the Africans a deserved advantage heading into the halftime break.

Australia responded early in the second half and drew level just ten minutes after the restart when an unfortunate own goal from Mohamed Hany restored parity for the Socceroos.

Neither side could find a winner during the remainder of normal time or the additional 30 minutes of extra time, forcing the contest to be decided from the penalty spot.

Egypt held their nerve in the shootout, converting all four of their penalties, while Australia failed with two of their attempts as the Pharaohs sealed a 4-2 victory.

The result sends Egypt into the Round of 16, where they will face the winner of the clash between Argentina and Cape Verde.

For Australia, the defeat brings their 2026 World Cup campaign to an end despite a spirited fightback after falling behind in the first half.
