Black Stars goalkeeper Lawrence Ati-Zigi has opened up about his Ghanaian roots, insisting he is proudly Ghanaian despite many people assuming he was born in Europe.

The St. Gallen shot-stopper revealed that he was born and raised in Ghana, spending his childhood in Nima and Kotobabi before moving abroad to pursue his football career.

“I’m a Zongo boy. I speak several languages. Most people think I was born in Europe but I was born and raised in Ghana. I lived in Nima and Kotobabi,” Ati-Zigi said in an interview with Sporty FM.

The 29-year-old also disclosed that his multilingual background has helped him throughout his football journey.

“I speak Ga, Twi, Ewe, Hausa, French and German as well.”

Ati-Zigi has been part of the Black Stars since 2018, making over 30 appearances for the senior national team. He has also represented Ghana at two FIFA World Cups, featuring five times, including two appearances at the 2026 tournament.

The experienced goalkeeper has enjoyed spells with RB Salzburg, FC Liefering and French side Sochaux before establishing himself at Swiss outfit St. Gallen, where he remains one of the club’s key players.
