Three people have died from suffocation during celebrations following Mexico’s 2-0 victory over Ecuador at the FIFA World Cup, authorities in Mexico City have confirmed.

The victims, a 19-year-old woman, a 48-year-old woman and a 44-year-old man, were among the massive crowds that gathered around the Angel of Independence monument to celebrate Mexico’s first World Cup knockout-stage qualification since 1986. Authorities also reported that a 30-year-old man died after suffering an epileptic seizure during the celebrations.

According to the city’s health authority, emergency responders treated three unconscious people at different locations along Paseo de la Reforma before transporting them to hospital, where they were pronounced dead from suffocation.

Mayor Clara Brugada expressed condolences to the victims’ families and urged supporters to celebrate responsibly.

More than one million fans flooded the streets after the historic victory, which booked Mexico’s place in the Round of 16, where they will face England in their next World Cup fixture.
